intro to advent

adventicon2Thanks to Jonny Baker for sharing this poem from Rowan Williams. A fitting prelude to Advent, which begins tomorrow.

Advent Calendar

He will come like last leaf’s fall.
One night when the November wind
has flayed the trees to the bone, and earth
wakes choking on the mould,
the soft shroud’s folding.

He will come like frost.
One morning when the shrinking earth
opens on mist, to find itself
arrested in the net
of alien, sword-set beauty.

He will come like dark.
One evening when the bursting red
December sun draws up the sheet
and penny-masks its eye to yield
the star-snowed fields of sky.

He will come, will come,
will come like crying in the night,
like blood, like breaking,
as the earth writhes to toss him free.
He will come like child.

  1. I very much like this image, did you create it? Is it a collage? Obliged, Daniel.

Thanks, Daniel. I’m part of a faith community called House for All Sinners & Saints in Denver and we made this during our first Advent together, back in 2008, using Christmas advertising. We did one quadrant of it each week, in sort of a paint-by-number way, and then someone added the outline once it was completed and mounted.

    • Oh yes I know about y’all’s great church, Nadia Bolz-Weber is a Face book friend. This was very creative idea that I like very much. I’m a somewhat more traditional icon painter but I may try something more creative like this in the future. Every Blessing and much obliged.
